Les dragons anciens sont tout ce qu'il y a de plus exceptionnel au sein d'une race qui l'est déjà par nature. En des temps immémoriaux, Midgardsormr résolut de fuir sa patrie plongée dans le chaos de la guerre pour une terre plus accueillante. Après un long voyage à travers l'espace, il jeta son dévolu sur une planète irisée de bleus et de verts, dotée d'une nature foisonnante et généreuse, où il scella un pacte avec la volonté qui lui avait donné son nom : Hydaelyn. Les sept œufs contenant ses rejetons, qu'il avait portés dans son sein tout du long, pouvaient dès lors y éclore en sécurité, et lorsque le grand moment arriva, ils donnèrent naissance à Hraesvelgr, Nidhogg, Ratatosk, Bahamut, Tiamat, Azdaja et Vrtra. Devenus grands, les enfants de Midgardsormr se séparèrent, chacun d'entre eux s'installant dans un recoin de la planète où il engendra à son tour de nombreux peuples draconiques. Mais toute vie faite chair doit connaître sa fin, quelle que soit sa puissance, et c'est ainsi que Bahamut fut vaincu par les Allagois à la fin de la 3e ère astrale, tandis que Ratatosk et Nidhogg périrent à leur tour durant la Guerre du chant des dragons. Hraesvelgr et Tiamat sont cependant toujours de ce bas monde, tout comme Vrtra, le benjamin de la famille qui a récemment pris une importance considérable en raison de son rôle de satrape de Radz-at-Han d'où, tapi en coulisses derrière un immense rideau, il a comblé les Thavnairois de bienfaits au cours des siècles. Quant à Azdaja, nul ne sait où elle se trouve, ni même si elle respire encore...
Though there are many exceptional dragons, the wyrms of the first brood are beyond compare. In a time before reckoning, Midgardsormr traversed the great expanse, bearing seven eggs as he searched for a new home. Arriving upon Hydaelyn, he formed a pact with the will of the star and secured for his children a bounteous dominion. The wyrms born of this clutch would grow into Hraesvelgr, Nidhogg, Ratatoskr, Bahamut, Tiamat, Azdaja, and Vrtra─beings of immense power and majesty. The seven then scattered to the far reaches of the world, there to spawn broods of their own, and thus did the dragons become legion. Though they have the capacity to live for nigh on an eternity, several of the first brood have fallen. Bahamut was vanquished by the Allagans in the Third Astral Era, while Ratatoskr and Nidhogg's deaths marked the beginning and end of the Dragonsong War respectively. Hraesvelgr, Tiamat, and Vrtra remain among the living. Vrtra, the youngest, is perhaps the most prominent of late, owing to his long-standing relationship with the people of Thavnair. Instrumental in establishing the nation of Radz-at-Han, he has long guided it from the shadows, only to recently reveal himself and formally assume the role of satrap in the wake of the Final Days. Azdaja's status─whether she is alive or dead, much less where she may be─is currently unknown.
Die sieben Hohen Drachen gelten als die ersten und mächtigsten ihrer Art. Zum Anbeginn der Zeit erreichte Midgardsormr, der Ahnherr aller Drachen, den Planeten Hydaelyn und brachte sieben Dracheneier mit sich. Er schloss einen Pakt mit Hydaelyns Willen und machte den Planeten zu seiner neuen Heimat. Aus den von ihm behüteten Eiern schlüpften die sieben Hohen Drachen: Hraesvelgr, Nidhogg, Ratatoskr, Bahamut, Tiamat, Azdaja und Vrtra. Sie wuchsen heran, verteilten sich auf der Welt und brachten viele Nachkommen hervor, aus denen sich zahlreiche Drachenstämme entwickelten. Bahamut fiel gegen Ende der Dritten Ära des Lichts den Streitkräften des Allagischen Kaiserreichs zum Opfer. Für Ratatoskr und Nidhogg endete die Auseinandersetzung mit Ishgard tödlich. Von drei der Drachen - Hraesvelgr, Tiamat und Vrtra - ist bekannt, dass sie noch leben. Vrtra, der jüngste von ihnen, fand schon früh ein Interesse an Thavnair, förderte die Entwicklung von Radz-at-Han zu einer mächtigen Handelsstadt und wachte im Verborgenen über die Bewohner der Insel. Von Azdaja hingegen fehlt jede Spur und es ist nicht einmal bekannt, ob sie lebt oder verstorben ist.
ドラゴン族の中でも、特に強大な力を有するとされる七翼の竜のこと。 始原の時、すべてのドラゴン族の始祖たる幻龍「ミドガルズオルム」は、七つの卵を携えて飛来し、惑星ハイデリンに降り立った。そして星の意思たるハイデリンと盟約を交わし、この星を新たな棲処とすることを決めた。この卵から孵った存在こそ、「七大天竜」と呼ばれる竜たちであり、後に聖竜フレースヴェルグ、邪竜ニーズヘッグ、詩竜ラタトスク、光竜バハムート、闇竜ティアマット、月竜アジュダヤ、星竜ヴリトラと呼ばれるようになった。長じて逞しい竜となった彼らは世界各地へと散り、多くの子を儲け、多くのドラゴン族が生まれたのである。 なお、バハムートは第三星暦末期に古代アラグ帝国の軍勢との戦いで、ラタトスクとニーズヘッグはイシュガルドとの対立の果てに、それぞれ討たれている。現存が確認されているのは、フレースヴェルグ、ティアマット、ヴリトラの三翼。このうち末弟であるヴリトラは、古くよりサベネア島の民と交わり、交易都市ラザハンの成立にも貢献、長らく太守として陰ながら人々を導いてきた。一方、アジュダヤについては行方不明となっており、生死も定かではない。
